“HOWA’s 7th Anniversary – A Farewell, A Welcome, and a New Chapter”

As HOWA approaches its 7th anniversary, we find ourselves not only celebrating a milestone but also standing at a moment of transformation. This year marks more than just another page in our history—it’s a rebuilding anniversary.

Phyllis Bickford

With the upcoming departures of Suanne Carlson and Phyllis Bickford, our Co-Executive Directors, we say goodbye to two women who have been the heart and backbone of HOWA since its very beginning. They were instrumental in turning an idea into a thriving nonprofit, pouring countless hours, endless determination, and deep compassion into building a community where nomads could find support, resources, and a sense of belonging.

Their leadership carried us through both the early days of excitement and the more recent years of challenge. They’ve guided with steady hands, kept the mission alive through storms, and inspired everyone who had the privilege to work alongside them. Saying they will leave “big shoes to fill” is an understatement—Suanne and Phyllis have shaped HOWA in ways that will be felt for years to come.

As we thank them and wish them well on their next adventures, we also turn toward the future. We are pleased to welcome Karen Battaglia, our current Trustee Secretary, as HOWA’s Interim Executive Director. Karen brings with her a deep understanding of our mission, a proven dedication to the nomadic community, and the leadership skills to guide us through this next phase.

With Karen at the helm, we return to the roots that inspired HOWA’s creation. Those same values—community, compassion, and resilience—will carry us into the next chapter, stronger, united, and ready to keep moving forward.
